I. General Overview

A distiller is a device used to separate a liquid mixture into its constituent components. Its fundamental principle relies on the differences in boiling points of the components: under heated conditions, the components of the mixture gradually vaporize, and the resulting vapor is then condensed in a condenser, with part of it re‑condensing into liquid and accumulating. Finally, the purified substances corresponding to the different components are collected. Below, we will outline the components of a distiller and the function of each part.

II. Components

1. Boiler

The boiler serves as the heater for the distiller and can typically be powered by coal, gas, or electric heating elements. Its primary function is to supply thermal energy, enabling the components of the mixture to volatilize and evaporate.

2. Condenser

A condenser is a device that converts the vaporized gas from a distiller into a liquid; its primary function is to cool the steam, causing it to condense. Condensers typically employ water cooling or air cooling, and their cooling efficiency directly affects both the separation performance and the separation rate.

3. Tower Body

The tower is a cylindrical column containing numerous separable components, with packing material installed inside to increase the surface area and enhance vapor–liquid contact, thereby enabling the separation of pure components from the mixture. The type and structure of the packing significantly influence the separation efficiency.

III. Functions

1. Steam supply: The boiler generates steam, causing the components in the mixture to volatilize and evaporate.

2. Component Separation: The distillation column, through its various structural designs and the properties of the packing materials, enables the separation of pure components from the mixture.

3. Condensed vapor: The condenser converts the vapor exiting the distiller into a liquid, thereby isolating the pure component from the mixture.
